The elderly with visual deficiency and work: risk and protection aspects
Abstract
In the life stage of old age, the natural morphofunctional transformations of the aging process can affect the
physiological functions, for example, by acquiring a disability. Because vision is the sensory organ with the
greatest contact with the world, the impairments of visual impairment in relation to functional performance
are usually present, with reduced work capacity. The objective of this research was to investigate the resilience process in elderly people who acquired visual impairment. It is a research of qualitative and exploratory type. Data were collected from eight elderly patients diagnosed with acquired visual impairment.The semi-structured interview and content analysis was used as instrument, which generated several thematic categories. He was cut for presentation here, the category identified and named as Workplace Disability Experience.The results indicate that the daily life of these elderly professionals at work is permeated with aspects of risk and protection. It is concluded that the lack of knowledge of the companies about visual impairment, such as the accessibility features, generate numerous risks for these professionals and that the presence of favorable interpersonal relationships in the work environment act as protective aspects.
