Braille, the earlier the better

Abstract

The text below is the report of two simultaneous experiences with children that was introduced to the Braille system use, who was already literate in common system. One of them continued in the original class where there were only visually impaired students that used optical functionalities to see the letters; the other one was immediately transfered to a class with students that used the Braille system living daily with this system. The report shows the importance of to put the child earlier and earlier for as long as possible in conctact with the system that will be part of her life and will be her prime medium of reading and writing, comparing the two realities. Being the research teacher a blind person, who was closely envolved in the process and who had also lived the two stages, as blind and visually impaired student, the theme is importante to him, in the attempt to offer their students the what considers the best to their academic development.
